Death of an Unknown Soldier
Deep in the mud I lay
The stench of dead bodies rotting around me
Made me sick.
We waited for the Lieutenant's shout
Then we ran
Blood streaked the dirty land.
I felt a sudden pain embrace me
And then I fell
As I desperately tried to regain my balance
I felt more stinging pains.
There was no chance now of getting up:
I was dying in No-Man’s Land
I was frightened and alone
I was fighting to stay alive
Unconsciousness swamped over me
Like a dark shroud.
The mud covered me completely
Fighting to stay above it
I battled against an unseen terror
Waving my arms frantically
My face became covered.
I could no longer breathe.
Finally, with a deep sigh
My limbs stopped swaying like seaweed.
It was over
