Drowning

A little bird, a little bird, a little bird was she
All alone and frightened as she was drowning in the sea
Her wings were drenched and she couldn't fly
As her little fighting spirit kept trying not to die

The water choked her badly and got into her ears
All alone and terrified, she realised all her fears
Her little claws kept on grasping for a miracle that was not to be
Her eyes clouded with her tears and the water of the sea

As she struggled and she fought, she saw a figure on the beach
And although he knew she was dying, he made no attempt to reach
She wailed, and she cried, but he did not seem to know
And her little claws did reach to him, but he was self-absorbed in all his woe

She went under a wave, and she cried out in pain and fear
As she recognised that figure was someone she held most dear
He had turned his back, and was allowing her to die
Now her wings were filled with sea would never, ever fly

She looked at him, so saddened, why would he hurt her so?
Why would he turn his back on her, why would he let her go?
Was she an evil thing, something that he despised?
Or was she merely another thing, a love not realised?

Her movements became more frantic, she was choking from the pain
And when she thought of him, the hurt returned again
Even though he wouldn't come, she waited for a sign
Even though he listened, he denied her the lifeline

Her little face was bloated, she was tired and she was worn
And suddenly her memories came, right to the day that she was born
She looked at him still, horrified that he could stand on by
And watch the water take her, take her down and let her die

But no-one was coming, and the water became a grave
There was no man in armour, there was no bird to save
The world turned to darkness, in the blinking of an eye
As the bird lost her hope, and whispered to the world a fond goodbye
